GBT Charger Guide for Chinese EVs in UAE
A Chinese vehicle does not automatically mean one charging connector. Some cars arrive in the UAE with Type 2 and CCS2 ports, while many China-market imports use GBT AC and GBT DC.
The safest process is simple: open the charging flap, identify both ports, then choose the charger or adapter. The vehicle name alone is not enough.
GBT Is Not One Universal Plug
GBT charging is based on China's GB/T standards. The system separates AC charging from DC charging. The two connectors look different and serve different purposes.
The current standard family includes general connection requirements, a dedicated AC coupler standard and a separate DC coupler standard. One adapter therefore cannot automatically solve both home AC charging and public DC charging.
GBT AC vs GBT DC
| GBT AC | Home, workplace and portable charging |
|---|---|
| GBT DC | Rapid DC charging |
| UAE Alternative | Type 2 AC and CCS2 DC |
| Adapter Rule | AC and DC adapters are separate products |
| Main Rule | Check both ports first |
Which Vehicles May Use GBT?
GBT is common on vehicles built for the Chinese domestic market. In the UAE, this can include imported versions of BYD, ZEEKR, ROX, Volkswagen ID.4, Nissan N6 and other Chinese-market EVs or plug-in hybrids.
The same model may also exist in a GCC or export version with Type 2 and CCS2. Never assume that every Chinese-brand vehicle uses GBT.
How to Identify the Port
Open the charging flap and remove all covers. Take one clear photo showing the complete inlet.
- Check whether AC and DC are separate.
- Look for GB/T markings.
- Check the voltage and current label.
- Confirm the original vehicle market.
- Review the manual and VIN information.
Option 1: Dedicated GBT Wallbox
A dedicated GBT wallbox is usually the simplest solution for daily home charging. It connects directly and avoids using an AC adapter every day.
Available power may include 7kW, 11kW or 22kW. The car will still draw only the limit allowed by its onboard charger.
Option 2: Type 2 to GBT AC Adapter
This adapter can allow a GBT AC vehicle to use a compatible Type 2 charger. It is useful when the customer already owns a Type 2 wallbox.
Check the phase support, maximum current, locking system and temperature protection. The adapter does not increase the vehicle's charging power.
Option 3: CCS2 to GBT DC Adapter
A CCS2 to GBT DC adapter is more complex than an AC adapter. It must support the physical connection and communication between the charger and vehicle.
Compatibility can depend on vehicle software, battery voltage, charger brand, communication protocol and adapter firmware. Confirm support before sale.
Dedicated GBT DC Charger
A dedicated GBT DC charger can be better for workshops, fleets, dealers or sites serving Chinese-import vehicles regularly.
It must match the required voltage range, power and communication standard.
7kW, 11kW or 22kW?
7kW
Common for single-phase homes and many imported vehicles.
11kW
Requires three-phase power and vehicle support.
22kW
Also requires three-phase power. The car must support 22kW AC to use it fully.
Installation in the UAE
The installer should check electrical load, phase supply, cable route, cable size, breaker, residual-current protection, isolator and earthing.
GBT changes the connector, not the electrical safety requirements.
Common Buying Mistakes
Buying by Vehicle Name
The same model may use GBT or Type 2 / CCS2.
Confusing AC and DC
A Type 2 to GBT AC adapter cannot replace a CCS2 to GBT DC adapter.
Choosing Power From the Wallbox Label
The onboard charger sets the actual AC power.
Ignoring Communication Compatibility
This is especially important for DC adapters.
Best Solution by Customer Type
| Daily Home User | Dedicated GBT wallbox |
|---|---|
| Existing Type 2 Wallbox | Verified Type 2 to GBT AC adapter |
| Occasional Fast Charging | Verified CCS2 to GBT DC adapter |
| Workshop or Fleet | Dedicated GBT AC or DC charger |
| Travel Backup | Portable GBT charger |
Conclusion
The correct GBT solution starts with identifying the actual vehicle ports. GBT AC and GBT DC are separate systems, and imported versions of the same model may differ.
MEV Charger can review port photos, confirm the charging standard and recommend a dedicated charger or adapter.
